Health Equity Interest Group

The NIHR Cancer and Nutrition Collaboration has launched a Health Equity Interest Group, a community of cancer research active clinicians, scientists and members of the public. Its concern is to undertake research that is useful for improving the health of as many people as possible living in the UK. It is a important to find ways to include everyone for research to benefit all.

Purpose

The group will proactively support, contribute to and enhance research and action that is socially and culturally inclusive.

Objectives

  • To identify opportunities to address health equity through research activity
  • To facilitate collaboration in pursuit of health equity in grant development, research, publication and events
  • To support development of methodology and methods to address diversity in studies and grant applications by acting as an accessible advisory group
  • To learn together by sharing updates on recent and current work about cancer, nutrition and health equity
  • To identify, review and share tools, training and other resources about inclusion and diversity in research

Focus

The Health Equity Interest Group’s current focus is on improving access to research about cancer and nutrition for people from areas of social deprivation.

Activity

Bimonthly virtual group meetings are open to all involved in cancer and nutrition research. We are currently:

  • Sharing methods of research inclusion by presenting examples
  • Collaborating on a manuscript reporting our methods and outcomes
  • Making a collection of publications relevant to design and delivery of inclusive cancer and nutrition research
